Finding the Right Employees for Your Franchise & Keeping Them | VetFran
If you ask most managers and business owners about their stressors right now, hiring and retention are probably near the top.
The labor shortage seems to be one of the many lingering affects of the pandemic. If leaders didn’t already have their hands full running a business, they certainly do now when it comes to tackling the labor shortage.
There are a number of factors impacting hiring and retention in today’s market, but there are steps you can take to help bring quality employees to your business and keep them there. It all starts with building the right culture:
Be Flexible
Flexibility is what employees are desiring the most right now—and they aren’t waiting around for businesses to provide it. A lack of flexibility is one of the main impetuses of the Great Resignation. So, if employees find your business practices and rules inflexible, they are more likely to leave.
Put on your thinking cap about ways you can offer flexibility to your employees. Whether it is allowing employees to work in the evenings or giving them permission to work some days at home and some days in the office, there is always a way to be more flexible. In fact, depending on the job, you may find there’s no real reason for employees to be in the office at all.
Give Leadership a New Look
The saying is true: Employees don’t leave companies, they leave people.
Take a good, hard look at the leaders in your company. Now is a good time to upgrade management styles within your company and offering additional training to leaders about how to provide a positive work environment for employees.
Go on Offense
Avoid having to hire new employees by keeping your existing employees satisfied. Take steps to keep your employees happy by:
- Asking for feedback, since you can learn a lot from your employees when it comes to what is working and what is not working
- Setting clear expectations for your own behavior and theirs so everyone knows what is expected of them
- Giving recognition when it is due, as everyone likes to feel appreciated
