Unplug as a Leader | VetFran
Ever feel like every second of every day is spent focused on your work? You aren’t alone. It’s especially common among leaders.
Leaders sometimes feel as though they can never truly unplug from their business. Many business owners tend to take their work everywhere, including on vacation. But is that really helping you or your business? No!
Our team at VetFran wants you to understand the importance of unplugging every once in a while, as it can help to greatly benefit not just you but your business, too!
It’s OK to Take Time Off
Leaders have some exceptional qualities, including an ability to:
- Communicate effectively
- Encourage strategic thinking
- Empower their team
- Focus on team development
- Respect others
But one quality that tends to work against leaders is their need to control every little thing. They want to make sure they are a part of every decision. That tendency can make it difficult to leave the office and truly leave behind your work.
For the sake of your business and your health, you need breaks. Working 24⁄7 can cause a number of issues down the road, such as high blood pressure, unhealthy eating habits, stalls in productivity and a lack of quality sleep.
Set yourself and your business up for success by learning how to unplug:
Now Is the Time
So, how do you truly unplug from work in order to rest and recharge? You start by hiding your inbox from both your laptop and your phone.
You don’t delete it—you just move it to a space where you are not seeing emails about work coming through throughout the day and feel like you have to open and respond immediately. Turn off notifications. Things can wait.
Also, delegate tasks to members of your leadership team so you know urgent matters will be handled correctly. Then, within your out-of-office memo, list who people should reach out for specific issues while you are away. This can help you to feel less stressed when not paying attention to your work email.
If you are really starting to feel stressed about unplugging from your business, then take a break mid-week to mid-week so that you know and are involved in the week but still get a few days off.
